For the first time, a prototype for a newly designed Kia Niro was seen.

The new compact crossover is expected to hit dealerships in the second half of 2022 as a 2023 model, and its launch could come later this year.

The prototype is heavily camouflaged, but we can already see that the designers have given the new Niro a radically new look, similar to what is round at the recently unveiled 2023 Sportage.

Key design features include a clamshell hood, low-set headlights, and a tailgate with a pinched leading edge that resembles a ducktail spoiler. The vehicle also has vertical taillights. Interestingly, Kia already hinted at the design of its new Niro in 2019 with the Habaniro concept car.

It’s not clear what Kia has planned for the powertrain range. Hybrid powertrain is likely to be standard here in the United States at least, and we should see a repeat of the plug-in hybrid and battery-electric options as well. Expect the electric version to improve the 201 horsepower and EPA-rated 239-mile range of the current Niro EV.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
